Tickets for Downton Abbey
The prebook tickets for Highclere Castle which is the venue for Downton Abbey has been sold out for all of this year when they first went online 9 months ago so we will get to the Castle at 9.45am and wait in line for tickets sold on the day. This is the only way to get into the castle because some tickets are held in reserve for visitors on the day. They may suggest that after purchasing tickets for this day, we come back at 2pm so if this is the case, we will make our way into the Cotswolds to see some of the set locations. Should we gain entry than our tour starts at Highclere Castle
We head into Bampton which is a village to the west of Oxford and make our way to the St Mary’s Church. Bampton doubles as the fictional village of Downton and the church is used for Downton weddings, christenings and funerals. It evens been used for jilting at the altar. From there we head to Church View which is the site for Downton Fair and the home of two pubs, The Grantham Arms and the Dog and Duck. Bampton Community Archive is housed in the old Grammar School and is where Downton Cottage Hospital scene were filmed. Churchgate House which is adjacent to the church is used for external shorts of Isobel Crawley’s house. We head onto Shilton, a small village near Burford where we find The Old Forge in Akeman Street which was transformed into The Red Lion. The Red Lion was the public house where Mr Bates went to work after leaving Downton Abbey.
We head onto Swinbrook which is only 15 minutes away and go to The Swan Inn, which is which Lady Sybil and Branson stayed whilst planning their elopement. The last visit is Cogges near Witney and to the fictional Yew Tree Farm which played many scenes from the home of Mr Drewe. We will visit the farm shop, manor house, picnic orchard, walled garden and farm animals. The series 5 depicted the working class conditions of farming in post Edwardian time and the kitchen scenes are worth a visit to see the contrast of the rich and the poor living conditions. There is a cafe for refreshments and snacks at Cogges.
“I love the Cotswolds and the beautiful countryside and when its mixed with the set locations for Downton Abbey, it’s the best of both worlds. Highclere Castle is beautiful and elegant and it transforms me back instantly to my favourite parts of the TV series” Jean Taylor, Baltimore, USA
